Chilbolton

The Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research in Hampshire offers a unique set of active and passive instruments for measuring clouds and precipitation. It is home to the world's largest steerable meteorological radar (the 3 GHz CAMRa radar), which has full doppler and dual-polarisation capability; the 25-metre dish allows a high sensitivity and a narrow beam. The observatory also operates a large number of other instruments, many of which operate round the clock:

There are also a variety of other instruments including raingauges and Meteorological sensors.

This film documents the launch of Chilbolton in 1967.

The Chilbolton Observatory is part of the Science and Technology Facilities Council, and is run by the Radio Communications Research Unit at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. The majority of the observatory's funding comes from the Natural and Environmental Research Council.
